Checking is the option to decline to bet and pass the action to the next player, available only when no bet has been made in the current round. It is a neutral play that can signal weakness but can also be used strategically to induce opponents to bet. The check-raise is an advanced play combining a check followed by a raise. You cannot check if there is already a bet or raise.
