Top pair is one of the most common and important holdings in Hold’em, formed when one hole card pairs the highest community card. Its strength is heavily influenced by kicker — A-J on a J-high board (top pair, top kicker) is much stronger than J-8 (top pair, weak kicker). Top pair is frequently best on the flop but can be outdrawn by two pair, sets, and straights. Navigating top pair correctly is a fundamental post-flop skill.
