In online poker, position is everything. While the cards can be unpredictable, your ability to exploit positional advantages will determine your long-term success. Mastering the button (BTN) and the small blind (SB) is essential to take your game to the next level.

Playing the Button (BTN): The Best Position at the Table

The button is the throne of poker. From this privileged seat, you act last on every post-flop street, giving you valuable information about your opponents’ intentions before making your own decisions.

Advantages of the BTN

  • Action control: you set the pace of the hand
  • Full information: you see every action before deciding
  • Blind stealing: ideal for aggressive opens with marginal hands
  • Pot control: easier to manage the size of the pot

Strategy on the button

Take advantage of your wide opening range (up to 45–50% of hands in some spots). Stay aggressive against tight players in the blinds and exploit fold equity. Use continuation bets frequently and look for bluffing opportunities on dry boards when opponents show weakness.

Playing the Small Blind (SB): The Toughest Position at the Table

The small blind is where profits go to die. Bad position, forced investment, and limited action make this seat a minefield for inexperienced players.

Challenges of the SB

  • Out of position: you act first on every post-flop street
  • Forced investment: there’s already money committed in the pot
  • Squeeze play vulnerability: exposed to 3-bets from the big blind
  • Complex decisions: marginal calls are often negative EV

Strategy in the small blind

Adopt a tight-aggressive approach. Complete only with hands that play well in multiway pots or that have enough equity to handle raises. When you decide to enter, be aggressive — limping puts you under unnecessary pressure. Consider folding marginal spots, since the positional disadvantage amplifies your mistakes.

Master the BTN and SB to Master the Game

The difference between winning and losing players often comes down to positional understanding. On the button, maximize your edge with calculated aggression and wide ranges. In the small blind, minimize losses with selectivity and discipline.

Crucial tip: study your opponents

Study the tendencies of your specific opponents. Tight players in the blinds let you steal from the button more often, while loose-aggressive players in the big blind demand more caution from the small blind.

Patience and positional punishment

Online poker rewards patience and positional punishment. Master these two extreme positions and you’ll gain a significant edge over most recreational opponents who don’t grasp the importance of table position.

Remember: in poker, where you sit is just as important as the cards you’re dealt.
